Lake Delton is a popular resort area in Wisconsin. Extreme flooding in 2008 resulted in the failure of a highway embankment, which formed part of the reservoir rim. The failure resulted in a total release of the lake. This was a fast-track project to rebuild the saddle dam and repair the road embankment. Services include a seepage analysis, stability analysis, and the design of the embankment and the soil bentonite slurry trench cutoff wall.
Freese and Nichols worked as a subconsultant to Mead and Hunt. The entire project was completed in time to catch the 2009 spring runoff and was awarded a 2010 National Honor award by the American Council of Engineering Companies.
