With seven growing departments, the UTA College of Engineering requested new space for laboratories and offices which the existing building could not accommodate. The space requirements represent growth projections in research for several years to come. The addition of a 38,000-square-foot third floor was designed to accommodate this growth.
The existing floor and equipment were upgraded and enhanced, resulting in a comprehensive building expansion and modernization.
The new laboratories consist of an electron microscope and spectroscopy lab, anechoic chamber, biomaterial lab, biomechanical lab, optical lab, tissue engineering lab, genomic data lab, vision lab, RFID lab, electronic materials lab, chip probing lab and MSE ceramics lab. The expansion includes support areas for student offices, professor offices and conference areas.
The project was designed under a fast-track approach with a construction cost of approximately $18 million and was completed in Fall 2009.
