Freese and Nichols provided preliminary design, final design and construction phase services for The Colony's Wastewater Treatment Plant, expanding the average daily capacity from 3.4 MGD to 4.5 MGD with a peak flow capacity of 14 MGD. The plant is the first municipal plant in Texas to use Integrated Fixed Film Activated Sludge (IFAS), an innovative process that maximizes biological treatment without requiring facility expansion. IFAS and special designs accommodating existing infrastructure saved an estimated $2 million in construction costs.
This project was awarded the Gold Medal for Engineering Excellence from the Texas Council of Engineering Companies in 2008.
