Elevated Storage Tank Raises Innovation to New Heights

2011

The Town of Addison’s new elevated storage tank is a first-of-its-kind project for Freese and Nichols and the tank industry. The design incorporates wind turbines on top of the tank. The team made adjustments to the standard composite elevated storage tank, including:

  • a hemisphere-shaped bowl to create the impression of a chalice
  • aluminum cladding at the pedestal base to provide an aesthetic tie between the ground and the bowl
  • architectural ribbings on the bowl to create a sense of motion with a clear connection to the motion of the wind turbines

The tank’s artistic structure also embraces sustainable elements through eight wind turbines placed atop the tank. The wind turbines will generate approximately 70,000 kW/hours of electrical energy each year, exceeding the energy demand of the tank and tank site. The excess energy will be sold back to the grid.

The project also includes a learning center inside the pedestal where visitors will be able to see exhibits and learn about water supply and wind energy. It will also double as a large conference room, including restrooms and breakroom.
