Pedestrian Bridge Creates New Landmark

2011

The Phyllis J. Tilley Memorial Pedestrian Bridge will soon be a new landmark in Fort Worth. The signature bridge is the first arch-supported stress-ribbon bridge in the United States. The bridge crosses the Clear Fork of the Trinity River in Fort Worth and will link the City’s popular Trinity Trails, Trinity Park and Cultural District on the west side of the river with downtown Fort Worth on the east.

The project’s unique conditions led the team to select an elegant arch-supported stress-ribbon bridge, which incorporates an extremely thin profile with high structural efficiency. The bridge site is located within the floodway of the Trinity River and thus needed a slender profile to pass floods without increasing floodwater elevations. Through the use of a stress-ribbon design, the entire bridge can be submerged during maximum flood events (shown at right).

In addition, the design team incorporated a steel arch into the stress-ribbon bridge design to support the stress ribbon at mid-span and provide compensating thrust reactions at each end of the arch to offset the stress-ribbon tensile reactions.

The bridge is one of the first projects in the Trinity River Vision plan. Collaborating on the design was Rosales + Partners, Boston, and Schlaich Bergermann and Partner, New York.
