The 5 Ps: Water-Wise Flowers for Summertime Heat

Many people, landscape architects and personal gardeners alike, struggle to find flowers that don’t require excessive watering in the summertime. If you find yourself searching for low-water-requiring annual plants, remember the five Ps (pictured above; from left to right, top to bottom):

  1. Portulaca
  2. Purslane
  3. Petunia ('VIP' and ‘Laura Bush’ only)
  4. Perennial Phlox (‘John Fanick’ or ‘Victoria’)
  5. Periwinkle

These sun-loving annual plants tolerate the summer heat and don’t require as much water as other annuals do so you can keep the beautiful color in your planting beds without spending as much time watering.
