Employees Lead TxDOT Stormwater Detention and Fluvial Geomorphology Seminars

Kim Patak and Will Huff, Stormwater, Austin, presented a brownbag to 41 TxDOT area engineering staff in June related to stormwater detention analysis. Kim presented the basics of detention analysis, different methodologies and criteria, and software packages available to assist designers. Will presented a case study for Freese and Nichols’ Bee Cave Parkway project comparing a pond design using the modified rational and unit hydrograph methodologies. Although the unit hydrograph methodology requires more time to develop, the result was a 26 percent reduction in required storage volume, which results in a significant reduction in both land acquisition and construction costs.

Kim and Will concluded the presentation by sharing additional considerations such as long-term maintenance and operational needs, and design submittal requirements.

Stephanie Coffman, Environmental Sciences, Fort Worth and Kim Patak (mentioned above) presented a technical seminar, Evolving Approaches to Evolving Streams, to more than 70 attendees in San Antonio, San Marcos and Austin in July. The course covered the basics of fluvial geomorphology, how Freese and Nichols uses geomorphic assessments to proactively plan and protect infrastructure near creeks and rivers, and how geomorphic assessments are used in conjunction with hydrologic and hydraulic analyses to predict future erosion and streambank stability. 

Kim and Stephanie also presented a number of case studies highlighting how our geomorphologists and stormwater engineers use the results of these assessments to build sustainable and resilient projects.
