Enhancements Planned for Dallas’ MLK Corridor
A press conference was held last month in Dallas announcing the City’s plans to boost the aesthetic feel of the Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard corridor. The City plans to accomplish this by installing a series of Freese and Nichols-designed towers and streetscape improvements along the intersections of Atlanta Street and MLK, Malcolm X Boulevard and MLK, and also from the DART Station to Fair Park. The design monuments will include illuminated panels and artistic images of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X.
In the WFAA/Channel 8 article about the project, a South Dallas resident says, “As people drive through, they come to these towers and see all of this pride and beauty … It enhances the beauty of what’s happening in the community.”
In addition to the towers, Freese and Nichols also designed a number of proposed building façades for several businesses along MLK Boulevard. The City will allow building owners to apply for grant funding to adopt similar designs for their storefronts and spruce up the area.
