Title: Large River Modeling Using HEC-RAS 2D – A Case Study

Hector will present on a HEC-RAS 2D model of the Brazos River that was used to estimate water levels and discharges for the Memorial Day 2016 flood and Hurricane Harvey. Using the context of the Brazos River as a case study, Hector will demonstrate the inadequacy of traditional 1D modeling in evaluating certain situations, the differences between shallow overland and riverine flow modeling and the power of currently available modeling tools to represent very complex river systems.

Keith, Jorge and Lynn Schaub will present on the North Fort Hood Regional Drainage Masterplan, which was a holistic approach that Fort Hood took to discover the cause of common drainage problems and create a CIP list of various alternatives. They will emphasize the importance of good data and a streamlined modeling approach for the Master Plan and provide information on the Fort Hood Storm Water Champion Program, which was created to oversee engineering projects, programs and operations to ensure planning, development and construction comply with regulations as set up by the Master Plan.

Title: Where’s the Storm Drain? From 2D Study to Design: Modeling, Cost Benefit Analysis and Design to Understand and Address Residential Flooding in Downtown McKinney

Katie will present on the story of a storm drain improvements project from concept to reality in a downtown McKinney neighborhood built prior to current City stormwater ordinances. She will describe how they used a cost-benefit analysis to choose alternatives and obtain support from Council and stakeholders and provide lessons learned on what to proactively think about during the study phase to ensure a smoother transition to design.

Kelly and Gina will lead a highly interactive session on professional ethics to help participants better recognize ethical situations faced by engineers, analyze the issues of an ethical situation, and resolve the situation in a creative and professional manner.
