Pair Present at Hydrologic Warning Workshop
Cody Cockroft and Rita Anderson, both in Water Resources, Houston, were invited speakers at the Texas Regional Workshop of the National Hydrologic Warning Council (NHWC) on Nov. 11-12 at the San Jacinto River Authority offices in Conroe, Texas.
The NHWC assists emergency and environmental management officials by providing expert advice on the use of real-time, high-quality hydrologic information from automated remote data systems, with the goals of protecting lives, property and the environment. The Texas workshop was well-attended, including representatives from the Lavaca Navidad River Authority, Lower Colorado River Authority, Lower Neches Valley Authority, Sabine River Authority, San Antonio Water System, San Jacinto River Authority and Harris County Flood Control District.
Cody presented on various types of instrumentation in dam safety programs. Choosing the best instrument and knowing which critical measurement to monitor were discussed as he presented a wide range of useful approaches to monitoring dam safety. Rita spoke on the use of exercise programs to maintain healthy emergency preparedness programs. Other presentations covered the ALERT and ALERT 2 warning systems, with video and personal accounts of the recent floods in Colorado and Austin.
