Freese and Nichols has begun a Harris County Flood Control District project whose findings could shape the urban flooding conversation locally and nationally.

Last month, stormwater engineers from across the company mobilized for the first phase of the District’s Modeling, Assessment and Awareness Project, or MAAP next . The team conducted weeklong training in Houston to keep up to date with the latest modeling technology and methodologies.

The USACE has released HEC-HMS version 4.3. This update includes a few new features such as the redesign of the optimization trial when calibrating parameters, a new reach routing method, and enhancements to other routing methods. There are also bug fixes as outlined in the release notes .

This version supersedes all previous versions and can be downloaded here click here .

The USACE released new version HEC-RAS 5.0.6 that repairs a list of problems from the previous version. Updates were made to the 2D Manning’s N Regions, RAS Mapper Stored Maps, Advanced Time Step Control, Lateral Structure Connections and more.

Freese and Nichols is offering interactive workshops for the Hydrologic Engineering Center-River Analysis System, better known as HEC-RAS. This free software, developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers , includes 2D flow modeling capabilities that can depict flow patterns more accurately than one-dimensional models. HEC-RAS 2D equips dam owners and floodplain managers with more realistic models of complex river systems and large flood events, such as hypothetical dam breaches.
