National Groundwater Awareness Week
March 8-14 is National Groundwater Awareness Week, which promotes the importance of preserving this natural resource. The National Groundwater Protection Association offers many resources on its website, including articles, videos and fliers about being a good steward of groundwater.
National Groundwater Awareness Week is especially important for the state of Texas during the current drought. Groundwater provides an estimated 80% of water for agricultural use and more than 99% of drinking water for rural areas. Groundwater accounts for more than 1,200 gallons of Texas’ public drinking water per day.
The Texas Groundwater Protection Committee released a factsheet including these statistics and more information about the importance of the resource in Texas. Learn more about Texas groundwater issues and resources on the TGPC website.
