Freese and Nichols performed visual inspections of spillway gates at Robert Lee Dam and S.W. Freese Dam. Robert Lee Dam has 12 vertical slide gates for its gated morning glory spillway and Freese Dam has six 50-foot-wide by 29-foot-tall radial tainter gates which control its ogee-shaped spillway.
The purpose of the inspections was to assess the condition of existing coatings, estimate their remaining lives and identify alternatives and cost estimates for gate recoating work. The inspections also assessed the condition of gate seals, cathodic protection and mechanical hoisting systems (gate cables, hoist mechanisms and electric motors), as well as evaluating items identified in 2005 TCEQ safety inspections for each dam.
