Following Hurricane Rita in 2005, the San Jacinto River Authority (SJRA) contracted with Freese and Nichols to evaluate and design emergency repairs to Lake Conroe Dam's damaged rock riprap. Our team recommended an emergency lowering of the lake to protect the exposed embankment, then completed the fast-track design and opened bids within two and a half months of the storm. A quick approval from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality Dam Safety Unit was obtained through verbal coordination. Our team also developed an innovative financial incentive for the contractor to expedite completion of the project.
Freese and Nichols coordinated with SJRA and FEMA to receive funding and approval for the repairs and Hazard Mitigation Funding to upgrade portions of the dam.
