Freese and Nichols performed an accreditation study of a 2.9-mile levee in Little Rock, Arkansas for the Riverdale Levee Improvement District. The levee system consists of a combination earthen embankment, two stormwater pump stations, a lock for small boats and floodwalls that were integral components of adjacent structures. The system protects tens of millions of dollars of residential and commercial property from floodwaters of the Arkansas River.
Freese and Nichols provided the geotechnical field exploration and analysis necessary to assess the levee system and its level of compliance with FEMA criteria for levee safety. The levee system was initially found to be in good condition but not fully compliant. Once the needed improvements were made, Freese and Nichols submitted a certification of compliance to FEMA. The report is currently under review by FEMA.
