Freese and Nichols is designing improvements to Calendar, Eden, Ledbetter and Russell Roads, a quadrant of streets servicing three public schools with staggered drop-off and pick-up hours. The once rural area has experienced a population boom that the narrow, two-lane county-type roads could not support. Additionally, the majority of the existing roadways did not have proper sidewalks to accommodate students walking to and from school.
Freese and Nichols will widen portions of the roadways and design improvements to key intersections that will enhance traffic flow during peak hours. Additional design considerations include enhanced safety features such as expanded sidewalks, crosswalks and designated lanes for bicyclists, as well as a roundabout to accommodate school buses’ wide turning radius. Freese and Nichols’ roadway design will protect the extensive existing utilities system and will include drainage improvements to the area. Freese and Nichols' phased construction schedule places the majority of construction during summer months in order to minimize construction impacts.
