The Oklahoma Department of Transportation contracted with Freese and Nichols to redesign the intersection of US 81 and SH 66 just north of Interstate 40 in El Reno, Oklahoma. The goal of the project is to increase roadway capacity, as well as improve the operational functionality of this intersection. El Reno is a rapidly growing community in Canadian County, thus, conditions are expected to deteriorate over time. This intersection is less than one-half mile north of Interstate 40 and serves as the gateway into El Reno.
The current configuration (as shown above) has challenging geometry that provides skewed movements through the intersection, heavily unbalanced traffic movements that can lead to congestion, limited sight distance and access issues that can contribute to unsafe conditions. Freese and Nichols will design alternatives that include additional turn lanes to relieve congestion, a standard four-legged roundabout, a combination roundabout/traffic signal and a dual roundabout to resolve the traffic issues at this location.
