Troy Schmidt Joins Freese and Nichols to Advance Applied Technology
As Freese and Nichols continues to expand how it applies technology to solve complex client challenges, Troy Schmidt will help guide that work as the firm’s Strategic Initiatives and Applied Technology Director.
Troy brings more than 20 years of experience applying emerging technologies to real world challenges, with expertise spanning Geographic Information Systems (GIS), software development, risk analysis, cloud native technologies and artificial intelligence.

In his role, Troy will work closely with Chief Growth and Technical Officer Chuck Wolf to coordinate strategic initiatives, guide the Applied Technologies team and support the firm’s efforts to incorporate artificial intelligence into project delivery.
“I’ve always been interested in the next thing that’s coming out,” Troy said. “For at least the past 15 years, my focus has been applying new technology to an existing solution or creating a new solution around it.”
Troy’s experience with traditional and open-source GIS platforms gives him a broad perspective on evaluating and applying emerging technologies. He focuses on creating client facing solutions that are intuitive, practical and easy to use while helping organizations navigate the challenges that can accompany technology adoption.
“Troy’s unique talents in communicating with data, delivering applied technology solutions and his deep experience and understanding of resiliency needs across the United States are going to help us deliver even better solutions for our clients,” Chuck said.
Troy sees an opportunity at Freese and Nichols to create reusable technology solutions that support Building Information Modeling (BIM), computer aided design, GIS and data science efforts. By developing frameworks that teams can adapt across projects, he aims to help Freese and Nichols deliver solutions more efficiently while continually improving the tools and approaches available to clients.
“The biggest thing we can do is provide that foundation and that sandbox, then build solutions that every client delivery can improve upon,” Troy said. “That way, we make things better and better as we move forward.”
Troy’s experience in technology development and in the architecture, engineering and construction industry positions him to connect emerging technologies with practical applications. In his new role, he will help advance Applied Technology efforts that make project delivery more efficient and scalable while creating greater value for clients.
Troy earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Kentucky.
