Since our founding in 1894, we’ve provided our clients innovative and sustainable solutions that strengthen our communities’ safety, resilience and livability. Our multidiscipline teams of engineers, architects, planners, scientists, construction managers and other specialists bring technical expertise and responsiveness so our clients can responsibly steward their resources.

We constantly innovate to meet our clients’ needs, and we guide them through every stage of the project life-cycle: planning, funding, program management, procurement, regulatory compliance, design, construction management, and operations and maintenance.

Who We Serve

Our dedication to client service means we stay focused on particular types of customers. This laser focus allows us to have a high rate of repeat business because we don’t get distracted. It also means we hire leaders in their field who understand the needs and trends for the types of clients they serve.

  • Cities and Counties

Freese and Nichols has served municipalities since our inception, developing innovative solutions to the challenges of growing populations, aging assets and disaster preparedness. Having worked as extensions of our clients’ staffs, our teams understand the distinctive dynamics of a municipal environment. We have helped hundreds of cities and counties develop and manage capital improvement programs (CIPs) for utilities infrastructure, transportation systems, parks and more. Additionally, our dedicated funding team helps identify funding sources and navigate the application process, enabling municipalities to secure the resources they need for their capital improvement initiatives.

  • Water Districts and River Authorities

Across the United States, we’ve helped water districts and river authorities develop, maintain and conserve their water resources. With decades of experience in regional and state water planning, we understand the complexities of managing water supplies, and we develop strategies that consider reuse, desalination and other nontraditional methods. We’ve designed and rehabilitated hundreds of dams, designed hundreds of miles of transmission pipelines and managed billion-dollar programs for new water systems.

  • Transportation Agencies

We have extensive recent experience designing, inspecting and managing construction for state departments of transportation and tollway authorities. Our team has more than 125 people available for highway projects, with precertifications in 90+ work categories, and we’re certified to work for the DOTs of Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, North Carolina and Georgia. We support that expertise with a high-level understanding of state infrastructure issues, environmental permitting, funding options and collaborative project delivery methods.

  • Federal Agencies

Our federal clients can leverage the full strength of Freese and Nichols’ entire service line: flood control, environmental design and compliance, water supply management, ports and navigation design, facilities improvements and more. Our decades of experience meeting the needs of federal agencies and military bases have given us proven expertise and knowledge in the regulations and requirements that drive federal work. Our federal clients can rely on us to manage a project at a single installation or execute work for their nationwide programs. We are well-versed in executing IDIQ contracts, and we have a history of working with small businesses in our mentor-protégé program.

  • Higher Education

Having completed hundreds of projects on more than 45 campuses across the United States, we understand the challenges that two-year and four-year institutions face as they adapt to changing populations, budget constraints and advancing technology. Our planners, architects, engineers and construction managers handle projects including comprehensive campus master plans, designs and renovations of specialized facilities, and installation of sustainable building systems to reduce energy use.

A History of Long-Term Relationships

One thing that sets Freese and Nichols apart is that we don’t just pursue projects — we pursue partnerships. We work diligently to understand each client’s overall business and specific needs, with the goal of forming a long-term relationship as their trusted advisor. By doing so, we become part of the community and part of the organization.

Our goal of being the very best at client service drives the way we do business: We have put in place quality review processes, project reporting procedures, client surveys, executive client visits and extensive staff training. This dedication to service has resulted in many relationships lasting for decades — sometimes even a century — and 85.7% of our work coming from repeat clients.
