Sabine River Authority Reels In Growth with New Recreation Area
Along the shores of Toledo Bend Reservoir, the Sabine River Authority of Texas (SRA-TX) and local leaders saw an opportunity to strengthen recreation, attract tourism and support economic growth in Sabine County. To achieve that vision, SRA-TX developed the Sabinetown Recreation Area, a 260-acre destination designed to host major fishing tournaments while expanding public access to one of the nation’s premier bass fisheries.
To bring this vision to life, SRA-TX partnered with Freese and Nichols to transform former timber company land into a recreation area centered around a tournament fishing facility. The team provided planning, environmental permitting, engineering design and construction-phase services for the project, helping SRA-TX navigate site development, infrastructure improvements and tournament-specific operational needs.
The new recreation area positions SRA-TX to attract visitors year-round while creating opportunities for future recreational and community development around Toledo Bend Reservoir.
Designed for Tournament Operations and Recreation
The completed facility was designed around the unique needs of fishing tournaments, with an emphasis on efficient traffic flow, boat launching, trailer parking, emergency access and user convenience. At the heart of the site is a six-lane boat ramp capable of supporting large tournament events, along with a 100-foot-diameter heavy-timber pavilion that serves as a gathering space for tournament operations and community events.
The recreation area also includes ADA-accessible pathways connecting major site features, dedicated angler queuing lanes, organized circulation patterns, staging areas for boat preparation, strategically located restroom facilities and parking for 280 truck-and-trailer combinations. Together, these features create a seamless experience for tournament participants while improving public access to Toledo Bend Reservoir year-round.
Creating Economic Opportunity
The Sabinetown Recreation Area serves as a key economic development asset for Sabine County and the surrounding region. Fishing tournaments bring anglers, families, spectators and event staff who support local hotels, campgrounds, restaurants, fuel stations and retailers.
By investing in infrastructure that can host major events, SRA-TX has strengthened Toledo Bend Reservoir’s reputation as a premier fishing destination while creating new opportunities for tourism-related spending and business growth.
Additional investments are already underway. A new amphitheater under construction adjacent to the recreation area is expected to expand opportunities for concerts, community gatherings and other events that draw visitors to the region.
A Successful Launch
Despite permitting hurdles, construction challenges and a demanding schedule, SRA-TX successfully delivered the project in time to host the 2026 Fishers of Men National Championship bass tournament on March 28.
SRA celebrated the facility’s grand opening during the tournament’s final weigh-in, allowing anglers, spectators and community leaders to mark the occasion alongside one of the sport’s premier events. Special guests included U.S. Rep. Nathaniel Moran, Sabine County Judge Daryl Melton and Texas Representative Joanne Shofner.
